KABOOM!

We are working to end playspace inequity in 25 playces over the next 5 years nationwide to address key child and community outcomes, closing the gap in access to great places to play in the communities, systems, and networks in which playspace inequity exists.
 
The future health and well-being of our kids is deeply connected to the places where they live, learn, and play. KABOOM! works to end playspace inequity so that every child can experience the same benefits and have access to the same opportunities to thrive that places to play provide. The 5-year, $250 million 25 in 5 Initiative focuses on building partnerships with communities, nonprofits, municipal agencies, and other organizations that provide a network of playspaces where kids live and learn. Together, we are identifying the specific playspace inequities and gaps in access to quality playspaces in local systems to ensure places to play are built where there is the greatest need. Our work to end playspace inequities in 25 playces will ultimately lead to a roadmap for scaling our efforts across the country.


25 in 5 Initiative to End Playspace Inequity National

On April 5, 2022, KABOOM! announced Baltimore as the first official partner of the 25 in 5 Initiative to End Playspace Inequity, our five-year, $250 million plan to accelerate efforts towards achieving playspace equity across the United States. Baltimore City Public Schools, Baltimore City Recreation and Parks, and KABOOM!, with the support of Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott, are embarking on the urgent work ahead to ensure every child in Baltimore has access to places to play where they live and learn.
 
For decades, segregation, disinvestment, and depopulation have forced Baltimore city leaders to make seemingly impossible choices about where to invest in playgrounds ‚Äì iconic and critical public infrastructure for every child. Alongside our network of committed partners, we can drive the positive systemic change necessary to ensure that every kid in Baltimore has an amazing place to play, learn, and unlock their greatest potential.
 
A 2019 analysis of Baltimore City Public Schools‚Äô playgrounds by KABOOM!, which details the specific need for additional school playgrounds, found that Baltimore City Public Schools receives hundreds of millions of dollars less in capital funds each year compared to surrounding school systems that serve a comparable number of students. According to Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Dr. Sonja Santelises, ‚ÄúOur top priority is the educational, emotional, and social success of our students. Accessible and safe playspaces like these are critical to those efforts. This initiative with KABOOM! is one more step to ensuring our students have great facilities to learn and grow.‚Äù
