The Sarara Foundation works alongside the Indigenous Samburu to protect and preserve the 850,000-acre Mathews Range in Northern Kenya – home to endangered species and this pastoralist community. Through sustainable enterprise development, regenerative conservation, and local partnerships, we support the locally-led Namunyak Community Conservancy to preserve and protect its cultural heritage, landscape, and biodiversity. At the heart of our work, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the world's first community-owned African elephant sanctuary. It's a haven for orphaned elephants and a model for grassroots conservation – powered by Samburu keepers, fueled by locally sourced milk from 1,200+ Milk Mamas, and grounded in the age-old wisdom of coexistence with wildlife. Proving people and wildlife can thrive side by side, we're proving that when Indigenous communities lead the way, conservation becomes more effective – and just.
