The New England Grassroots Environment Fund Inc. (Grassroots Fund) was founded over 26 years ago by philanthropy as a non-endowed public foundation. The mission is to energize and nurture long-term civic engagement in local initiatives that create and maintain healthy, just, safe and environmentally sustainable communities throughout the six New England states. With a focus on those who have often been marginalized, the Grassroots Fund has built comprehensive grant programs for grassroots projects, predominantly ad hoc/unincorporated that have limited access to resources. These grant programs use a participatory decision-making process where community readers and grantmaking committees determine funding allocations, helping to build a stronger, cross-sectional environmental movement.
