PINKS

We promote human rights and pioneer new social narratives through queer feminist imaginaries. As a queer feminist filmmaking collective based in Seoul, we produce, distribute, and screen timely documentaries with a community-centered approach. As active members of active social movements, we build direct alliances with marginalized groups, acting as both participants and documentarians working towards making South Korea a more diverse society. Through the language of cinema, we engage with audiences and encourage them to take part in social changes that are urgently needed in South Korea. Our aim is to educate and build alliances between diverse social communities. Since 2004, we advocate for the rights and self-representation of women and queer people across the spectrum, including transgender and gender non-conforming people. 1. Film production: Putting aesthetics into praxis: new social narratives powered by queer feminist imaginaries. We archive social pain and resistance as they happen on the ground, build strategic narratives, and amplify them for the general public. Aiming to create social change through film, we see content creation is a form of activism. Going beyond the boundaries of nationality, culture, and social conditions, we co-create content with communities whose stories are left out from mainstream narratives, including sex workers, the LGBTQ+ community, victims of government violence (the Yongsan and Sewol Ferry disasters), and unfairly dismissed workers. 2. Community care & creation: We aim to build a creative ecosystem which is rights-respecting, realizes gender equality, encourages collaboration and extends mutual care circles by connecting queer feminist creators. PINKS aims to build a horizontal network between creators and nurture queer feminist creators. Currently, we run the following activities: (Co-)producing content: documentary films, anthology films, exclusive content for the PINKS YouTube channel(https://www.youtube.com/@TV-tb1fo), queer webdramas and entertainment shows Operating the media team and maintaining a roster of queer feminist creatives Conducting & analyzing surveys on Korean queer communities 3. Impact screenings: Our screenings are designed as spaces for action and solidarity, and a hub for co-creation with our audiences. We believe that our audiences are actors of political change, and our screening spaces are a home for solidarity. We approach screenings holistically, starting with taking inspiration from and standing in solidarity with social movements initiated by marginalized communities. Following this initial stage, we deepen our understanding of core issues through collaboration, and design social questions in conversation with the audience at screenings. In screening and distributing each of our projects, we (co-)create impact screening campaigns by curating exhibition spaces, organizing political forums and conferences, conducting community screenings for the LGBTQ+ communities, commemorative events, media campaigns, and supporting legislative changes. 4. Solidarity-based action: We realize solidarity right at the frontlines of social movements, as artist-activists with a passion for change, empathy, and action. By creating media movements around social issues, we strategize, execute, and produce timely content on the ground. From emergency responses to timeless movements, we identify and amplify the stories of those often left out of mainstream media by using media campaigns, filming protest movements, interviewing victims of social violence, and reinterpreting archival media.
