EkoRural is registered in Ecuador as an NGO since October 21, 2009 and a founding member of Groundswell International. It is dedicated to helping people help themselves. Through the strengthening of local leadership and organizational and self-management capacities -- of women and men as well as children, EkoRural helps impoverished people analyze the roots of their problems and find lasting solutions, thereby alleviating the effects of hunger, disease, and poverty. Uniquely focused on people-centered development, we work in the areas of sustainable agriculture, local food systems and community health. A main goal is strengthening the capacity of rural people and organizations to shape policies conducive to people-centered development and the well-being of rural populations. Working in both formal and informal spaces of policy, our partners and we aim at influencing a fundamental shift in how people think, do, and organize for change. EkoRural intervenes to open up innovation pathways in two interactive spaces: 1) "depth" - families, neighborhoods, communities operating in geographies and 2) "breadth" - knowledge systems and social networks where people compete, collide, and collude to define and determine institutional norms.
