Sunbirds International

The Gaza Sunbirds exist to advance mobility justice in Palestine and beyond by restoring the right to move, to participate, and to belong. In Gaza, movement is restricted at multiple levels: borders, infrastructure, access to healthcare, employment, and public space. For Palestinians with disabilities, these barriers are compounded. Mobility is not only about the body. It is about access to opportunity, visibility, income, education, and civic life. Our mission is to respond to this layered immobility with structured systems that combine professional sport, rehabilitation, advocacy, and redevelopment. Through our professional para-cycling programme, we create clear and credible pathways for athletes with disabilities to train and compete at the highest level. We build performance systems that include coaching, adaptive equipment, strength and conditioning, race strategy, international exposure, and athlete welfare. As we work toward sustained representation at major global competitions, including the 2028 Summer Paralympics in Los Angeles, we position elite sport as both performance and diplomacy. When a Palestinian para-athlete competes internationally, it affirms belonging on the world stage and challenges narratives that confine Palestinian potential. Our rehabilitation work extends beyond Gaza. Through programmes in Egypt and Belgium, we provide training environments, medical access, prosthetics support, and international competition pathways that are not currently available inside Gaza. These cross-border programmes are not temporary solutions. They are part of a coordinated ecosystem that links recovery, high-performance sport, and long-term development. Athletes move between contexts, gaining technical expertise, exposure, and stability, while remaining rooted in the mission of rebuilding opportunity for their community. Rehabilitation, for us, is a continuum. It begins with physical recovery and access to prosthetics, but it continues through adaptive sport, structured training, peer support, and leadership development. We aim to move individuals from injury to participation, from participation to performance, and from performance to mentorship. In doing so, we help shift disability from a condition of exclusion to a platform for agency and contribution. Our advocacy work ensures that mobility justice remains central to conversations about disability, sport, and reconstruction. Through storytelling, media, public speaking, and partnerships with institutions and federations, we advocate for structural inclusion rather than symbolic representation. We challenge systems that produce immobility and work toward policies and redevelopment strategies that expand access for those most affected. In Gaza, we connect sport and rehabilitation to broader redevelopment efforts. We support humanitarian initiatives, invest in accessible spaces, and work toward the long-term establishment of integrated rehabilitation and training centres. Our vision is to rebuild infrastructure in ways that do not reproduce exclusion, but instead expand participation and dignity. At its core, our mission connects individual aspiration with systemic change. When one athlete rides, it represents more than personal determination. It signals the reopening of pathways that have been closed. Through professional sport, cross-border rehabilitation programmes, advocacy, and community redevelopment, the Gaza Sunbirds work to restore movement in every sense: physical mobility, social mobility, economic mobility, and the freedom to move forward.
